Encounter Overview

O10S – Midgardsormr builds on the Normal encounter by removing telegraphs and introducing layered mechanic combinations that require early recognition and coordinated movement.

The fight revolves around Ambient Aether pattern recognition, while adding role responsibility, tank debuff management, and strict positioning checks that punish hesitation or misreads.

For a full breakdown of raid difficulty across all tiers, see the FFXIV Raid Rankings.

Arena Overview

The encounter takes place on a square arena with no passive hazards, but large-scale AoEs, divebombs, and movement mechanics will frequently restrict safe space.

Positioning discipline is critical, especially during overlapping mechanics and Bulwark-based mechanics later in the fight.

Boss Mechanics

Ambient Aether (Savage Core)

Midgardsormr performs two spins that determine the attack pattern:

  • Horizontal + Horizontal: Point-blank AoE → move out
  • Horizontal + Vertical: Donut AoE → move in
  • Vertical + Vertical: Cross AoE → move to corners
  • Vertical + Horizontal: X-shaped AoE → move to cardinals

Strategy: No telegraphs—react to spins immediately. Pre-positioning is mandatory.

Tank Mechanics

Tail End: Frequent tankbuster. Requires mitigation and often tank swaps.

Time Immemorial: Applies tank debuffs:

  • Death from Below (Yellow): Cannot tank grounded enemies
  • Death from Above (Blue): Cannot tank flying enemies

Strategy: Tanks must constantly adjust based on boss state (flying vs grounded).

Stack / Spread Pressure

Akh Morn: Multi-hit stack. Stay grouped for all hits.

Thunderstorm: Spread markers on multiple players. Maintain spacing while resolving Ambient Aether.

Earth Shaker: Line AoEs on all players. Spread evenly around boss to avoid overlap.

Movement + Arena Control

Northern Cross: Applies Thin Ice. Movement causes sliding.

Ice Storm: Players drop expanding ice puddles. Place at edges or corners.

Horrid Roar: AoE circles under all players. Stack to bait, then move as a group.

Strategy: Controlled group movement is key—panic movement causes overlap deaths.

Add Phase

Ancient Dragon + Immortal Keys: Keys must be destroyed to remove invulnerability.

Frost Breath: Tank cleave—face away.

Rime Wreath: Raidwide damage.

Arcane Bulwark: Dropped after add death. Transfers between players and is required for later mechanics.

Strategy: Assign a dedicated Bulwark handler to prevent accidental transfers.

Bulwark Mechanics

Crimson Breath: Targeted lethal cone. Must be soaked using Bulwark immunity.

Strategy: Pass Bulwark to marked player → previous holder disengages immediately.

Crimson Orbs + Hot Tail

Crimson Orbs: Sequential ‘+’ explosions across arena.

Hot Tail: Line AoE targeted at a player.

Strategy:

  • Stack to bait Horrid Roar
  • Move through safe orb pattern
  • Tethered player uses Bulwark and aims safely

Divebomb + Exaflare Phase

Cauterize: Divebomb across arena.

Exaflare: Moving explosions in columns.

Horrid Roar: AoE baiting continues.

Strategy: Stack → bait → move as a unit through Exaflare lanes while avoiding divebombs.

Final Phase Overlaps

Combined Mechanics:

  • Ambient Aether + Thunderstorm
  • Thin Ice + AoE baiting
  • Exaflare + Ice Storm + Akh Morn

Strategy: Maintain structure:

  • Stack → bait → spread
  • Respect spin patterns first, mechanics second
  • Keep arena clean (ice puddles placement matters)

Encounter Flow

The encounter begins with Ambient Aether pattern training, quickly layering in spreads, stacks, and tank mechanics.

The add phase introduces Bulwark management, which becomes critical for surviving later mechanics.

The final phase combines all previous mechanics into overlapping sequences, testing consistency and coordination.

Failure to maintain positioning discipline or Bulwark control will quickly result in wipes.
