FFXIV Extreme Trial Mounts — Complete Guide by Expansion

How Extreme Trial Mounts Work

Drop system: Mounts drop randomly from the chest after clearing the Extreme version of a trial. The drop is not guaranteed — each clear is one chance at the mount. Normal difficulty trials do not drop mounts.

Totem system: Every clear awards one totem regardless of whether the mount drops. At 99 totems you can trade them for the mount directly — eliminating RNG entirely. This is your guaranteed exit if the mount refuses to drop.

Collection rewards: Each expansion has a themed mount set. Collect every individual mount in the set and a bonus collection mount becomes available through a short unlock quest. Collection rewards do not drop from trials — they are quest-locked.

Farming older content: Older Extreme trials can be cleared unsynced (No Restrictions), meaning high-level players can solo them or clear in a very small group quickly. This dramatically speeds up totem accumulation for legacy sets.

Trial Mount Farming Tips

Extreme only — not Normal. Mounts only drop from Extreme difficulty versions of trials. Normal trials do not reward mounts. Always queue for the Extreme version, typically unlocked through the Unending Codex or the relevant expansion’s NPC.

Farm unsynced for old content. Any trial from past expansions can be cleared with No Restrictions (unsynced), allowing you to solo or clear in a very small group quickly. This is the fastest way to accumulate totems on legacy sets.

Use the totem exit. If a mount refuses to drop after many clears, totems are your guaranteed path out. At 99 totems you can trade directly for the mount — no further RNG. Every clear is progress toward the threshold regardless of what drops from the chest.

Collection quests unlock automatically. You don’t need to track down a quest mid-farming. Once you obtain the last mount in a set, the collection quest becomes available. For most sets the quest NPC is in Mor Dhona or the relevant expansion hub city.

Party Finder for older content. Older Extreme trials don’t appear in roulettes. For content that’s too old to pop via Duty Finder quickly, Party Finder farms are the reliable method. Use the Duty Complete filter to find active farming groups.

Check what counts before farming. Not every mount in an expansion counts toward the collection reward. Rathalos does not count toward Kamuy of the Nine Tails. Nightmare does not count toward Kirin. See the set notes above before committing to a grind.
