Encounter Overview
A6N – The Cuff of the Son is the second encounter of Alexander: Midas and features a multi-boss sequence where players face four separate enemies—Blaster, Brawler, Swindler, and Vortexer—each with their own distinct mechanics.
Unlike traditional boss fights, this encounter functions as a progression gauntlet. Each boss tests a different skill: movement and spacing (Blaster), damage splitting and tank swaps (Brawler), positional awareness (Swindler), and coordinated environmental execution (Vortexer). Success depends on quickly recognizing mechanics and adjusting positioning accordingly.
For a full breakdown of raid difficulty across all tiers, see the FFXIV Raid Rankings.
Arena Overview
The arena remains consistent throughout the encounter, but its function changes depending on the boss. Players must adapt to mines, elevation panels, knockbacks, and environmental objects like water sprites and ice boulders.
Because each boss uses the same space differently, awareness of positioning relative to the arena is more important than memorizing a fixed layout.
Boss Mechanics
Blaster
Mines: Blaster drops mines around the arena. Tanks may need to reposition the boss to prevent the group from being forced into unsafe areas.
Clone Markers: Players are marked, and copies of Blaster appear at those positions. After a short delay, these clones charge forward in the direction they are facing.
Execution:
- Spread out to avoid overlapping clone hits
- Ideally spread in a loose line to control charge paths
- Avoid standing in front of clones to prevent damage and Vulnerability Up
Key Focus: This is a movement check. Clean spacing removes almost all danger from the mechanic.
Brawler
Base Positioning: Tank faces the boss away from the group while all other players stack behind it.
Hand-Based Mechanics: Brawler’s attacks are determined by its arm configuration. Players must watch the boss model to identify the incoming mechanic.
Single Drill:
- Targets a player with a proximity line AoE
- Target should move away from the group to minimize damage
Single Laser:
- Tank-only soak mechanic
- Tank mitigates and absorbs damage alone
Double Laser:
- Raid-wide split damage
- Tank must join the group to share damage
Tank Swap:
- Stacks of Magic Vulnerability Up accumulate
- Swap at 3–4 stacks to maintain survivability
Important: Laser damage bypasses invulnerability if lethal—proper mitigation and positioning are required.
Swindler
Altitude Debuff System: Each player receives either a high or low debuff.
Floor Panels: The arena shifts elevation with raised panels glowing red. Players must match their position to the correct elevation.
Execution:
- High debuff → move to lower panels
- Low debuff → move to raised panels
- Incorrect positioning results in heavy damage and Vulnerability Up
Stack Mechanics: Orbs appear above players indicating how many players must stack to split incoming damage.
Key Focus: This is a positional awareness check. Players must read debuffs quickly and move to the correct elevation while preparing for follow-up AoE damage.
Vortexer
Water Marker: A player is marked and will spawn a water sprite at their location.
Lava Pools: Appear around the arena, limiting movement space.
Knockback: Vortexer uses knockbacks that reposition players, often forcing interaction with other mechanics.
Ice Ring Mechanic:
- Shiva-style ice rings appear
- At least one player must intersect the rings to freeze the water sprite
Ice Boulder Creation: Freezing the water creates a boulder used for line-of-sight protection.
Ultra Flash:
- Massive raid-wide attack
- All players must hide behind the ice boulder to survive
Tank Swap:
- Vulnerability stacks require swapping at ~2 stacks
Key Focus: This is the coordination check of the encounter. Players must correctly create and use the ice boulder or the raid will wipe.
Encounter Flow
The encounter progresses linearly through each boss:
Blaster → Brawler → Swindler → Vortexer
Each boss introduces a different mechanic style, requiring players to quickly adapt their positioning and awareness. There is little downtime between transitions, so maintaining focus throughout the entire sequence is critical.
Timeline (Simplified)
Blaster (Spread + Charges) →
Brawler (Hand Reads + Tank Swap) →
Swindler (Elevation + Stacks) →
Vortexer (Water + Ice + Line-of-Sight)
Key Strategy Notes
- Spread cleanly for Blaster clones to control charge paths
- Watch Brawler’s arms to identify mechanics quickly
- Swap tanks consistently during Brawler and Vortexer
- Match elevation correctly during Swindler
- Always create and use the ice boulder during Vortexer
- Maintain awareness—each boss tests a different skill
