Encounter Overview

A5N – Ratfinx Twinkledinks is the first encounter of Alexander: Midas and introduces a mechanically interactive fight centered around player transformations, bomb control, and environmental manipulation. Unlike earlier Alexander encounters, this fight relies heavily on players using arena tools correctly rather than simply reacting to boss abilities.

The encounter revolves around managing bombs through transformation mechanics, handling periodic tank swaps during the boss’s enhanced state, and controlling space within the arena to avoid large AoE damage. While mechanically straightforward once understood, improper use of puddles or poor bomb handling can quickly overwhelm the party.

For a full breakdown of raid difficulty across all tiers, see the FFXIV Raid Rankings.

Arena Overview

The fight takes place in a square arena with a central tower surrounded by a purple activation circle. Interacting with this tower spawns transformation puddles along the edges of the arena, which are required to resolve key mechanics.

The boss is typically tanked in a corner to maximize space for bomb displacement. Because bombs have extremely large explosion radii, positioning the boss and party consistently in one corner makes it much easier to safely push bombs away from the group.

Boss Fight Mechanics

Global Mechanics

Corner Positioning: The boss should be tanked in a corner. This creates a predictable safe area and gives maximum room to push bombs away from the party.

Add Spawns: Adds periodically appear in the corners of the arena and must be picked up by tanks. These should be kept controlled and away from the group while DPS eliminates them.

Transformation System (Core Mechanic)

Central Tower: Standing inside the purple circle around the tower spawns two transformation puddles at the edges of the arena. Remaining inside too long deals damage, so players should only trigger it briefly when needed.

Red Puddle (Gorilla Form):

  • Transforms the player into a gorilla
  • Grants an ability to knock bombs away
  • Primary role: bomb control

Violet Puddle (Bird Form):

  • Transforms the player into a bird
  • Allows survival during specific boss attacks
  • Used primarily during Boost sequences

Execution Focus: These forms are not optional mechanics—they are required. Failing to use the correct transformation at the correct time is one of the most common causes of wipes.

Bomb Mechanics

Bomb Spawns: The boss periodically summons bombs in increasing numbers (one, then two, then three).

Explosion Radius: Bomb explosions cover nearly the entire arena. Improper positioning or failure to move bombs far enough will result in heavy damage or deaths.

Handling Bombs:

  • A player in gorilla form must knock bombs away from the group
  • Ideal direction is the corner opposite the party
  • If placed along a wall, players must hug the opposite wall tightly

Execution Focus: Bomb control defines the fight. Clean placement keeps the encounter stable; poor placement creates unavoidable damage.

Boss Mechanics

Large AoE Marker: A player marked with a red-orange indicator must move away from the group. This drops a large damaging puddle that persists on the ground.

Boost (Giant Form): The boss grows larger and begins stacking Concussion on the main tank. At four stacks, the tank is stunned and will be hit by a heavy tankbuster dealing roughly 90% of their maximum HP.

Tank Swap Requirement:

  • Off-tank must provoke at 4 stacks of Concussion
  • This intercepts the tankbuster safely
  • Tank control can either swap permanently or return afterward

Ground Pound Sequence: During Boost, the boss performs repeated heavy AoE attacks. Players must use bird form to survive this sequence.

Encounter Flow

The encounter cycles through a repeating pattern of bomb phases, add management, and Boost phases. Early on, the fight focuses on teaching players how to generate puddles and use transformations correctly.

As the fight progresses, bomb counts increase, requiring faster and more precise gorilla usage. At the same time, Boost phases introduce tank swap requirements and survival checks through bird transformation.

Players must continuously rotate between handling bombs, avoiding AoEs, managing adds, and activating puddles as needed. The fight becomes a steady rhythm of controlled execution rather than escalating complexity.

Timeline (Simplified)

Bomb Phase (1 bomb) →
Adds →
Boost (Tank Swap + Bird Form) →
Bomb Phase (2 bombs) →
Adds →
Boost →
Bomb Phase (3 bombs) →
Repeat Pattern → Enrage

Key Strategy Notes

  • Tank boss in a corner to simplify bomb placement
  • Use gorilla form to push bombs to the opposite corner
  • Always activate puddles intentionally—do not trigger tower randomly
  • Use bird form during Boost to survive repeated AoEs
  • Swap tanks at 4 stacks of Concussion
  • Handle adds immediately to reduce pressure
  • Keep players spread to avoid overlapping damage
