Easiest Mounts to Get in FFXIV

Easiest Mounts to Get in FFXIV

Not every mount in Final Fantasy XIV requires Savage clears, rare drops, or weeks of farming. Some of the best mounts in the game are sitting behind story quests, side content, reputation vendors, or a straightforward market board purchase — and most players walk past them without realizing how close they already are.

This guide covers the easiest mounts to obtain in FFXIV, organized by how much effort they actually require. If you are building a collection from scratch, trying to add mounts without committing to a farming loop, or just want to know what is within reach right now, this is where to start.

Quick Navigation

Tier 1 — Instant and Free

Source: Main Scenario Quest progression. No farming, no gil, no side content required.

These mounts unlock automatically as you progress through the Main Scenario Quest. They cost nothing beyond normal story progress and represent the fastest collection additions available to any player at any stage of the game. If you have not claimed all of them yet, check your mount list — some may already be waiting.

Chocobo

Your first mount and the one every player receives. The Chocobo unlocks early in A Realm Reborn through the MSQ and serves as the foundation of every collection. There is nothing to farm and nothing to purchase — it is simply there when the story gives it to you. If you have not unlocked flying for your Chocobo yet, that is worth prioritizing early as it significantly improves open-world travel across older zones.

Magitek Armor

Awarded through A Realm Reborn story completion. The Magitek Armor is one of the most recognizable mounts in the game and requires nothing beyond finishing the base game’s main story. Players who have completed ARR and not yet claimed it should check their key items — it may be sitting unclaimed.

Black Chocobo

Obtained early in the Heavensward expansion MSQ. Like the base Chocobo, it unlocks through story progress alone and requires no additional investment. If you own Heavensward and have reached the appropriate story point, you already have this.

Midgardsormr (MSQ Spoiler)

Note: This mount is awarded late in the A Realm Reborn main scenario. If you have not completed the ARR MSQ, the details below contain story spoilers.

Midgardsormr is one of the most visually striking mounts available through story progression alone — a dragon earned at a specific narrative milestone in ARR. Players who want a dragon mount without farming trial drops should prioritize completing the base game story. The mount is awarded automatically and cannot be missed.

Argos (MSQ Spoiler)

Note: This mount is awarded during the Endwalker main scenario. If you have not completed Endwalker, the details below contain story spoilers.

Argos is awarded during late Endwalker story progression and is one of the expansion’s most memorable mount rewards. Like all MSQ mounts, it requires no farming — only story completion. Players working through Endwalker for the first time will receive it naturally without any additional steps.

Tier 2 — Low Effort

Source: Side quests and achievement progression. Minimal time investment, no RNG.

These mounts require a small amount of deliberate effort beyond normal story progress — a side quest completion or a passive achievement milestone — but have no RNG component and no repeated farming requirement. Each one has a clear, predictable unlock path.

Unicorn

One of the simplest role-specific mounts in the game. Level a Conjurer to 30 and complete the quest Unicorn Power, which becomes available in Gridania. The Unicorn is an excellent early target for players leveling a healer job, since the mount is a direct reward for content you would be doing anyway. No drops, no farming, no waiting — just a quest completion.

Jonathas Achievement Mounts

Jonathas in Old Gridania exchanges achievement certificates for rewards, including several mounts: Behemoth, Ahriman, and Magitek Deathclaw among them. Achievement certificates accumulate passively as you play — completing quests, clearing content, reaching milestones — which makes these mounts excellent long-term collection targets that arrive without dedicated effort. Check your achievement certificate balance periodically and visit Jonathas when you have enough to trade. Players who have been in the game for a while may already have more certificates than they realize.

Tier 3 — Some Grind Required

Source: Beast tribe reputation vendors. Predictable progression, daily quest commitment required.

Beast tribe reputation mounts are easy in terms of difficulty — the quests themselves are simple — but they require sustained daily engagement over a period of days or weeks to reach the reputation rank needed to purchase them. None of these involve RNG or rare drops. The grind is purely one of time and consistency.

Cavalry Drake

Available for purchase with gil once you reach Trusted rank with the Amalj’aa beast tribe in Southern Thanalan. The Cavalry Drake is one of the earliest dragon-style mounts accessible through reputation content and a solid target for players who want something beyond the story collection without committing to trial farming. The Amalj’aa quests are straightforward and the reputation grind is among the shorter ones in the game.

Bomb Palanquin

Purchased from the Kobold beast tribe vendor in Outer La Noscea at a high reputation rank. The Bomb Palanquin is visually distinct enough to be worth the grind for collectors — it is not a mount you see frequently — and the Kobold quests, while repetitive, are quick to complete each day. The time investment is moderate and entirely predictable from the start.

Cloud Mallow

Available from the Moogle beast tribe in the Churning Mists once you reach Sworn reputation rank. The Cloud Mallow is one of the more popular easy mounts in the game and also one of the more time-consuming entries in this tier — Sworn is the second-highest reputation rank, which means a longer daily quest commitment than the Cavalry Drake or Bomb Palanquin. The path is completely linear and there is no RNG involved. It is simply a matter of showing up daily until the rank is reached.

Market Board Mounts

Source: Crafted items sold on the market board. Gil investment required, no content participation needed.

Market board mounts bypass quest and combat requirements entirely. If your priority is adding something to the collection quickly and you have gil to spend, these are the fastest options available outside of story progression.

Flying Chair

The Flying Chair is craftable and consistently listed on the market board across most servers. Prices vary by data center and patch cycle, but it is generally among the more affordable crafted mounts available. For players with spare gil who want an immediately distinctive mount without any farming, this is one of the cleanest options in the game.

Dhalmel

Another reliable low-friction market board pickup for players who prefer to spend gil rather than time. The Dhalmel is less commonly seen than the Flying Chair and appeals primarily to collectors building toward completionism rather than players looking for a flagship mount. Check current market board prices on your server before purchasing — availability and cost fluctuate.

Which Mount Should You Get First?

If you are building a collection from scratch, work through this order before moving into farming loops or more involved grind systems.

Start with everything the MSQ gives you — Chocobo, Magitek Armor, Black Chocobo, and the late-story rewards as you reach them. These cost nothing and should be the foundation of any collection.

From there, pick up the Unicorn if you have or are leveling a Conjurer. It is a single quest and one of the cleanest free mounts in the game.

Check your achievement certificate balance with Jonathas. If you have been playing for any length of time, you may already be closer to an achievement mount than you think.

If you want to add something through daily content, start a beast tribe reputation line. The Amalj’aa are the fastest to reach Trusted rank and the Cavalry Drake is a solid early reward. The Cloud Mallow is worth the longer Moogle commitment for players who want a more distinctive mount.

And if you simply want something in your stable today, check the market board for Flying Chair prices on your server. For the right amount of gil, it is the fastest possible addition to a new collection.

After that, the harder targets — trial mounts, raid drops, deep dungeon rewards — are waiting. Build the base first. The farming loops are easier to commit to when the collection already has momentum.

Guildmaster Notes

Mount collecting in Final Fantasy XIV is one of the longest roads in the game if you want to walk all of it. There are mounts behind hundreds of trial clears, behind Deep Dungeon floors that most players never see, behind achievements that take years to accumulate. The ceiling is genuinely far away.

But the floor is right at the start. The story gives you dragons and mechs and birds of legend before you have done anything that could be called farming. The game’s opening hours are quietly generous with the collection in a way that players focused on the harder targets sometimes miss entirely.

The mounts in this guide are not consolation prizes. The Magitek Armor is iconic. Midgardsormr is a dragon that carries narrative weight most trial mounts cannot touch. The Cloud Mallow is legitimately sought after. These are real additions to a real collection, and none of them ask very much in return.

Start here. Build something. Then decide which of the harder things is worth your time next — because there are enough of them that you will eventually have to choose. The collection is long, and the best collections are built one mount at a time.
