Expansion Context

Introduced in Patch 3.5, the “Hard” iteration of Sohm Al serves as a brutal mechanical refinement check for the end of the Heavensward cycle. It takes the environmental hazards of the original mountain and speeds them up to a frantic pace. This isn’t a dungeon for the complacent; it’s a test of reaction time and role fundamentals.

Mechanics resolve faster, add phases have higher stakes, and the burst windows are tuned to punish even a second of hesitation.

This is the mountain’s final warning before we head into Stormblood.

Tank Risk Assessment

You are the primary target in a volcanic death trap. Your cooldown management is the group’s life support.

  • The “Zero-Tolerance” Mitigation: The spikes here are heavy, predictable, and frequent. If your Sentinel or Shadow Wall is mistimed, you aren’t just taking damage—you’re forcing the healer into a recovery spiral.

  • Instant Add Pickup: Several encounters spawn secondary targets that bring high-frequency damage. You must secure them the millisecond they land. A loose add during a movement phase is an immediate threat to the run.

  • Spatial Discipline: Lava, debris, and boss orientation must be managed simultaneously. If you trap your DPS against a hazard, you’ve effectively ended the encounter.

Tank Risk Rating: 4.3 / 5

Cooldown discipline is mandatory from start to finish.

Healer Strain Analysis

Expect your throughput and resource management to be pushed to the limit.

  • The Cumulative Failure Trap: This is a 3.5-tier dungeon—the “Two-Failure Rule” is absolute. You can heal one mistake; two simultaneous failures from your party will likely exceed your maximum HPS capacity.

  • Sustained Throughput: There are very few “breathing” windows. Bosses love to layer party-wide pulses with targeted mechanics. You need to be shielding and prepping heals before the damage hits.

  • The Veteran’s Warning: In Sohm Al (Hard), prevention is your only reliable tool. If you’re playing purely reactively, you’re already behind the curve.

Healer Strain Rating: 4.5 / 5

Prevention is more reliable than recovery.

DPS Responsibility Index

Listen to the manual: your “Green Number” is worthless if you’re dead on the floor.

  • The Exterminator Protocol: Add priority is a hard requirement. If you delay a target swap to finish a combo on the boss, the incoming damage will break the healer. Delete secondary targets with extreme prejudice.

  • Precision Movement: The margin for error on positioning is razor-thin. Whether it’s baiting fireballs or managing the final boss’s chaotic arena, you must maintain your rotation while dancing through lethality.

  • Zero Tunnel Vision: If you ignore the mechanics for uptime, you are the reason the group wipes. Raw damage output does not carry this dungeon; execution does.

DPS Responsibility Rating: 4.5 / 5

Execution is non-negotiable.

Wipe Punishment Profile

Sohm Al (Hard) punishes repeated mistakes decisively.

Common wipe scenarios:

  • Burst window tank collapse

  • Add control failure

  • Stacked avoidable damage overwhelming healer throughput

  • Mechanic mispositioning leading to instant deaths

Recovery after one mistake is possible. After two, rare.

Wipe Punishment Rating: 4.6 / 5

Recovery margins are extremely narrow.

The “Big Three” Wipe Scenarios

  • Burst Window Collapse: A tank mistiming their defensive cooldowns during a predictable spike. A “naked” hit here often results in immediate death before the healer can finish a single cast.
  • Add Escalation: Delayed target swaps during transition phases. The extra bodies on the field will quickly overwhelm the healer’s capacity to stabilize the group.
  • Layered Mechanic Failure: Two players failing a positioning check simultaneously. In the finale tier, the damage is tuned high enough that overlapping failures are almost always a reset.

Overpull Tolerance

 Very Low.

The lava-filled corridors contain dense, high-damage packs. Reckless aggression without preparation is a death sentence.

Gear Sensitivity

 Low to Moderate.

Level sync ensures the mechanics remain dangerous. You cannot “out-gear” a failed dodge or a missed target swap.

How to Unlock

Level Requirement: 60
Expansion: Heavensward (Patch 3.5)

Final Guild Verdict

Sohm Al (Hard) is a strict execution wall. It doesn’t use gimmicks to win; it uses speed, sharp damage, and minimal recovery margins. If the group executes with veteran-level discipline, the mountain is conquered.

If the group hesitates or gets lazy, the volcano claims another reset.

Guild Classification: Extreme Risk (Heavensward Finale Tier)
