Encounter Overview
Chadarnook introduces a unique mechanic system centered around environmental interaction. Instead of reacting purely to boss abilities, players must actively use the arena’s canvases to counter incoming mechanics.
The fight alternates between possession phases tied to elemental paintings, requiring players to recognize the correct response and execute it quickly. Later phases combine multiple elements at once, increasing execution pressure and coordination requirements.
For a full breakdown of raid difficulty across all tiers, see the FFXIV Raid Rankings.
Arena Overview
The encounter takes place in a square arena surrounded by elemental paintings. Four canvases on the floor allow players to use a duty action to interact with mechanics tied to those paintings.
Each painting represents a specific mechanic, and the correct canvas interaction is required to survive incoming damage. Misuse or delayed interaction often results in heavy raid damage or failure conditions.
Boss Mechanics
Chadarnook
Demonic Howl
Raid-wide damage that occurs frequently throughout the encounter. Healers should be ready to stabilize the group after each cast.
Demonic Shear
Tankbuster on the main target. Mitigation should be used consistently, especially during overlapping mechanics.
Possession (Fire)
Players must use the nearby canvas to gain fire resistance. Failure to do so results in heavy raid-wide damage :contentReference.
Possession (Earth)
Players must use the canvas to gain levitation. Remaining grounded during the earthquake will result in heavy damage or death.
Possession (Water)
A tidal wave attack that requires a player to create a boulder using the canvas. The group must hide behind it to survive.
Possession (Wind)
Spawns delayed AoE orbs that must be pushed away using a canvas-granted mount ability. Proper orb control prevents unnecessary damage.
Prey
Targets players with moving AoEs. Affected players must keep moving and avoid dragging damage through the group.
Demonic Pain
Tethers players to the boss. Moving away reduces damage taken, making spacing critical for survival.
Flash Gale
Standard stack marker that requires players to group together to share damage.
Possession (Double Elements)
Later in the fight, two elements are combined at once. Players must resolve mechanics in the correct order, often requiring one canvas interaction before another :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}.
Haunt
Creates a clone that overlaps mechanics with the main boss, increasing pressure and forcing players to handle multiple mechanics simultaneously.
Encounter Flow
The fight begins with single-element possession mechanics, teaching players how each painting interacts with the arena. Early success depends on quickly recognizing which canvas to use and executing without hesitation.
Mid-fight introduces overlapping mechanics such as Prey + Tankbusters and tethers + raid-wide damage, forcing players to maintain awareness while continuing to handle elemental mechanics.
In the later stages, Chadarnook begins possessing multiple paintings simultaneously. Players must resolve mechanics in sequence, often requiring correct ordering of actions (such as gaining resistance before movement-based mechanics).
The final portion of the fight adds a clone, causing abilities to overlap more frequently. At this point, consistency and clean execution determine success.
