Encounter Overview

Phantom Train (Savage) expands heavily on the normal version by removing arena safety and increasing mechanical overlap. Players can now be knocked off the platform, turning positioning mistakes into instant deaths rather than recoverable errors.

The encounter revolves around controlled movement, intentional use of environmental tools, and handling overlapping mechanics under pressure. Managing ghost interactions, knockbacks, and positioning relative to the platform becomes critical to survival.

For a full breakdown of raid difficulty across all tiers, see the FFXIV Raid Rankings.

Arena Overview

The fight takes place on a narrow train platform with no guardrails. Knockbacks and poor positioning can instantly remove players from the fight, making spatial awareness significantly more important than in normal mode.

Ghost Blocks act as both hazards and tools. While they restrict movement, they are also essential for surviving knockback mechanics, creating a balance between preserving space and maintaining safety.

Boss Mechanics

Phantom Train

Ghost Block

Creates lane-based obstacles that block movement and kill players caught inside. Unlike normal mode, fewer blocks spawn initially, increasing pressure on positioning.

Spotlights

Track marked players and detonate after a delay. These must be positioned carefully to remove ghosts without removing critical obstacles needed for later mechanics.

Diabolical Whistle

Summons multiple ghost mechanics with different behaviors:

  • Knockback Ghost: Forces players to use Ghost Blocks or immunity to avoid being pushed off the platform.
  • Grabby Ghosts: Move across the arena and remove players on contact.
  • Stalker Ghosts: Chase tethered players and must be eliminated using spotlights.

Diabolical Headlamp

A line stack mechanic that also applies knockback. Players must align properly while accounting for displacement to avoid being pushed off the arena.

Head-On Collision

A proximity attack combined with knockback. Players must position away from the impact while ensuring they are not knocked into danger zones or other mechanics.

Diabolical Wind

Targets players with AoE markers that often overlap with knockback mechanics. Marked players must pre-position to avoid hitting others after displacement.

Diabolical Light

Drops proximity markers on a tank and healer. These should be placed away from the group, typically toward the edge, while managing tank positioning to avoid range-related debuffs.

Doom Strike

A tankbuster that frequently follows other mechanics, requiring mitigation planning and clean positioning.

Acid Rain

Raid-wide damage that adds pressure during already complex mechanic sequences.

Passenger Car

Players removed from the arena must defeat a ghost before returning. In Savage, ghost types vary by role and must be handled correctly for safe resolution :contentReference.

Encounter Flow

The fight opens with familiar mechanics from normal mode, but with tighter spacing and immediate punishment for poor positioning. Early sequences train players to preserve Ghost Blocks for upcoming knockbacks.

Mid-fight introduces overlapping mechanics such as Headlamp + Knockback Ghost and Wind + Collision, forcing players to pre-position rather than react late.

The add phase transitions into a structured sequence where players board the train and complete a DPS check before returning to a suffocating arena. Players must intentionally interact with ghosts to survive this phase, with role-specific responsibilities determining success.

After the add phase, mechanics begin chaining together rapidly, combining knockbacks, line stacks, proximity markers, and ghost management into continuous sequences. Positioning discipline and awareness of upcoming overlaps become essential.

The encounter ends with a hard enrage if the boss is not defeated in time.
