Encounter Overview

Memoria Misera (Extreme) is a highly structured execution fight built around directional baiting, phase-based Gunshield mechanics, and strict positioning discipline. The encounter revolves around Varis yae Galvus and his rotating Gunshield system, forcing the raid to adapt to layered mechanics while maintaining precise positioning.

Unlike most trials, this fight heavily emphasizes consistency and pre-planned positioning over reactive play. Many mechanics are designed to overlap, meaning poor setup quickly cascades into wipes.

For difficulty comparisons, see the FFXIV Trial Rankings.

Arena Overview

The encounter takes place in a square arena with lethal outer walls. Any contact with the edges results in imprisonment and heavy damage, often leading to deaths if not handled immediately.

Positioning inside the arena—especially center control—is critical due to knockbacks, directional mechanics, and limited safe lanes.

Mechanic Archive

Confines of Memory

Outer wall punishment mechanic.

Execution: Never get knocked into walls. If someone is trapped, prioritize breaking them out immediately.

Altius + Terminus Est

Player-created directional AoEs.

Micro-strategy: Stack behind boss facing tank → rotate sides after markers drop to force clean overlap and create safe space.

Alea Iacta Est

Multi-hit cone combo.

Execution: Stay behind boss for first hits → move in front for final back cleave.

Citius

Cleave tankbuster.

Execution: Tanks share or invuln. Everyone else strictly behind boss.

Ignis Est

Line AoE + point-blank explosion.

Micro-strategy: Bait together → move as a group to safe direction. Avoid drifting.

Ventus Est

Line AoE + donut.

Execution: Stay close to boss for donut safe zone while dodging line.

Festina Lente

Double healer stacks.

Execution: Split into two groups (4/4). Maintain spacing between healers.

Vivere Militare Est

Tank soak + DPS check.

Execution: Tanks grab pulses → DPS burn quickly → healers stabilize raidwide pressure.

Gunshield Mechanics

Loaded Gunshield

Raidwide AoE explosions on all players.

Execution: Pre-spread at assigned positions before detonation.

Reinforced Gunshield

Directional damage immunity.

Execution: Stop attacking → identify safe side → resume on unshielded side.

Electrified Gunshield

Knockback from boss.

Execution: Stay center or use knockback immunity.

Fortius

Rotating cleave pattern with puddle drops.

Micro-strategy:

  • Pre-spread to cardinals/intercards
  • Drop puddles cleanly
  • Minimal movement—step once to adjust rotation

Magitek Torch / Spark (DPS Check)

Stack vs spread check.

Execution:

  • Torch → stack tightly
  • Spark → immediate spread

Turrets (Electrified Phase)

Add pressure + tethers.

Execution:

  • DPS kill targetable turrets fast
  • Tanks grab tethers immediately

Safe Lane Mechanics

Repeated X-pattern AoEs with one open lane.

Execution: Identify missing lane quickly → pre-position before resolution.

Encounter Flow

Phase 1 – Fundamentals

The fight opens with Altius + Terminus Est, teaching players how to control arena space through directional baiting.

From here, the fight establishes its core rhythm:

  • Directional baiting
  • Stack/split execution
  • Tank cleave control

Ignis Est + Festina Lente introduces your first real overlap check, forcing the raid to split correctly while dodging line and point-blank damage.

The phase ends with Vivere Militare Est, acting as a DPS + coordination check before transitioning.

Phase 2 – Gunshield Rotation

This phase introduces randomized Gunshield mini-phases, each combining known mechanics in more complex patterns.

Key mindset:

  • Identify Gunshield type first
  • Then solve overlapping mechanics

Electrified: Movement + knockback + turret control

Loaded: Spread → safe lane → stack

Reinforced: Positioning discipline + damage control

The phase culminates in a DPS shield check, requiring rapid adaptation between stack and spread mechanics.

Phase 3 – Structured Execution

The final phase becomes highly scripted and punishes inconsistency.

Fortius + Gunshield combinations define this phase:

  • Spread → drop puddles
  • Resolve rotations cleanly
  • Handle Gunshield immediately after

Knockbacks, safe lanes, and directional AoEs begin stacking rapidly, forcing players to rely on pre-assigned positions rather than reaction.

Key success factor:

Minimal movement. Players who over-adjust or panic will die to overlaps or get pushed into walls.

The fight ends with a strict enrage tied to Altius, requiring consistent execution across all previous mechanics.
