Encounter Overview

Fafnir is the second encounter in Jeuno: The First Walk, the Dawntrail alliance raid crossover with Final Fantasy XI.

The fight emphasizes reading boss animations, avoiding sweeping AoEs, and handling add phases while navigating environmental hazards. Several attacks rely on recognizing Fafnir’s posture and reacting quickly before large area attacks resolve.

Later phases introduce moving tornado hazards and cascading AoE patterns, forcing players to constantly reposition.

Players may fall from the arena and die.

Arena Overview

The encounter takes place on a large circular platform.

Arena hazards include:

• dangerous edge AoEs from Dark Matter Blast
• moving tornado hazards
• cascading donut explosions
• falling from the arena edge

Movement awareness is required throughout the fight.

Mechanic Archive

Dark Matter Blast

Fafnir casts Dark Matter Blast, dealing heavy magical raidwide damage.

This attack also creates a dangerous AoE along the edge of the arena.

Response

• mitigate raidwide damage
• avoid edge AoE zones

Offensive Posture

Fafnir enters one of three attack stances based on animation.

The first time each occurs, a warning message appears.

Spike Flail

Fafnir raises its tail and the tail begins glowing.

This indicates a late telegraphed 270-degree AoE behind the boss.

The front of Fafnir is safe.

Players hit receive Sustained Damage.

Response

• move to the front of the boss

Dragon Breath

Fafnir flies into the air and its mouth begins glowing.

This signals a sweeping donut AoE breath attack.

The attack leaves behind a temporary lava ring on the arena.

Players hit receive Burns.

The lava ring begins dissipating from the location where the breath attack began.

Response

• move inside the donut
• reposition once lava begins fading

Touchdown

Fafnir flies upward and its claws glow.

This indicates a large point-blank AoE landing attack.

Players hit receive Concussion, which can be cleansed.

If used immediately after Dragon Breath, players must move toward the area where the lava ring begins dissipating.

Response

• move away from the boss
• identify safe exit from the lava ring

Baleful Breath

A four-hit line stack attack dealing magical damage.

Response

• stack in the line marker
• heal through multiple hits

Sharp Spike

Fafnir targets all three alliance tanks with telegraphed tankbusters.

Response

• tanks mitigate damage
• healers prepare for tank damage spikes

Darter Adds

Several Darter adds spawn in the arena.

They use Pestilent Sphere, dealing minor damage to random players.

If not killed quickly they begin repeatedly casting Venom, an untelegraphed frontal cleave that deals heavy damage and applies Toxicosis.

Response

• tanks gather adds
• DPS kill them quickly before enrage

Hurricane Wing

Fafnir unleashes nine hits of magical raidwide damage.

The final hit deals increased damage.

Response

• mitigate and heal continuously

Tempestuous Winds

Fafnir jumps to the edge of the arena and gains Directional Disregard, making its hitbox omnidirectional.

Several mechanics occur simultaneously.

Cascading Donut AoEs

A purple circle or donut indicator appears with arrows.

These signal cascading concentric donut explosions that move either:

• outward
or
• inward

This sequence repeats multiple times.

Tornado Hazards

Small and large AoE telegraphs appear.

These spawn moving whirlwinds that travel around the arena.

Being hit inflicts Windburn.

Response

• dodge tornado paths

Horrid Roar

Fafnir repeatedly creates red circle AoEs around the arena.

Players hit receive Hysteria, causing loss of control.

During this mechanic:

• several spread markers also appear

Response

• spread out
• avoid tornadoes and roar zones

After this sequence ends, the whirlwinds disappear and Fafnir returns to the center.

Offensive Posture (Repeat)

Fafnir again uses one of the three Offensive Posture attacks.

Players must react based on the animation.

Absolute Terror / Winged Terror

Fafnir flies to the edge of the arena and glows purple.

Two possible attacks occur.

Absolute Terror

Fafnir’s head glows.

A large line AoE fires directly in front of the boss.

Winged Terror

Fafnir’s wings glow.

Two line AoEs fire to both sides of the boss.

Response

• identify which direction the attack will fire
• move to safe zones

Final Sequence

After these attacks:

• Darters spawn again
• Fafnir casts Dark Matter Blast
• followed by Horrid Roar

The encounter then loops mechanics until Fafnir is defeated.

Role Pressure Analysis

Tanks

Tanks manage Sharp Spike tankbusters and Darter add control.

Healers

Healers must sustain the raid through multiple raidwide attacks including Hurricane Wing and Dark Matter Blast.

DPS

DPS players must quickly eliminate Darter adds while maintaining movement awareness during tornado mechanics.

Failure Points

Common wipes occur from:

• failing to kill Darter adds before Venom enrage
• standing in tornado paths during Tempestuous Winds
• incorrect positioning during Offensive Posture attacks
• overlapping spread markers during Horrid Roar
