Dungeon Overview
The Praetorium represents the climax of A Realm Reborn’s original storyline, bringing adventurers directly into the heart of the Garlean Empire’s command fortress during Operation Archon. Unlike traditional dungeons, this duty blends cinematic storytelling with structured encounters designed to escalate the tension of the final assault.
The modern version of The Praetorium is much more streamlined than the original 8-player version, following significant updates introduced with Duty Support. The encounter pacing now focuses primarily on three major bosses while still preserving the scale and atmosphere of the imperial fortress.
Mechanically the dungeon emphasizes arena awareness and pattern recognition rather than heavy DPS checks, though the final encounter still includes a small enrage mechanic that can punish slower groups.
Dungeon Objectives
- Secure the command chamber
- Make for the Laboratorium Primum
- Power and board magitek armor
- Defeat Nero tol Scaeva
- Defeat Gaius van Baelsar
Walkthrough Highlights
Imperial Fortress Assault
The Praetorium is designed as a forward push through an active imperial installation rather than a branching dungeon. Trash encounters consist primarily of Garlean soldiers and magitek units that defend the fortress corridors.
Enemy groups are usually manageable as long as tanks control pulls and keep ranged enemies grouped together.
Magitek Sections
Several sections involve interacting with magitek machinery or pushing deeper into the base using captured imperial equipment. These segments are primarily narrative in nature but reinforce the feeling of a coordinated assault on the Garlean command structure.

Boss Encounters
Mark II Magitek Colossus
Key Mechanics
Ceruleum Vent — Unavoidable raidwide damage.
Prototype Laser Alpha — Multiple circular AoEs originate from the center and travel outward.
Prototype Laser Beta — AoE markers placed on every player requiring the party to spread.
Grand Sword — Frontal cone attack targeting a player.
Strategy Notes
The party should spread when Prototype Laser Beta marks appear, then reposition once the AoEs resolve. The moving AoEs from Prototype Laser Alpha are slow enough that players can simply step between the gaps.
Tanks should keep the boss oriented away from the group to reduce the risk of accidental cleave damage from Grand Sword.
Failure Points
Most mistakes occur when players panic during the Beta spread mechanic and overlap their circles.
Nero tol Scaeva
Key Mechanics
Spine Shatter — Tankbuster.
Iron Uprising — Frontal cone AoE that knocks players back.
Activate — Summons a Magitek Death Claw that tethers to a player and slowly approaches.
Augmented Shatter — Stack marker on a player followed by a boss-centered AoE.
Augmented Uprising — Large directional attack from the edge of the arena.
Augmented Suffering — Arena-wide knockback from the center.
Strategy Notes
The outer edge of the arena contains an electrical field that inflicts Electrocution. During knockback mechanics, players should position themselves carefully so they are not thrown into the damaging perimeter.
When the Magitek Death Claw appears, non-tethered players should quickly destroy it before it reaches its target.
The stack marker mechanic requires players to briefly group together before spreading again for the following AoE.
Failure Points
Most damage spikes occur when players misjudge knockback positioning and land inside the electrical field.
Gaius van Baelsar
Key Mechanics
Innocence — Tankbuster.
Horrida Bella — Unavoidable raidwide damage.
Terminus Est — Flaming X markers appear that later fire line AoEs.
Phantasmata — Phantom Gaius copies appear and fire Terminus Est across the arena.
Festina Lente — Stack marker.
Ductus — Moving circular AoEs that travel across the arena.
Hand of the Empire — Spread markers placed on each player.
Veni Vidi Vici — Hard enrage attack triggered if Phantom Gaius adds are not defeated in time.
Strategy Notes
The fight revolves around identifying safe lanes during Terminus Est patterns. The flaming X markers show where the line attacks will travel, allowing players to position between them.
When Phantasmata appears, multiple copies of Gaius will fire additional line attacks, tightening the available safe space. Calm positioning between the attack lines is key to surviving the sequence.
Near the end of the fight, Phantom Gaius adds must be defeated quickly before the boss completes his ultimate attack Veni Vidi Vici.
Failure Points
The most common mistake is players moving directly into the path of Terminus Est lines while trying to reposition too quickly.

Difficulty Assessment
The Praetorium is primarily a cinematic finale rather than a mechanically demanding dungeon. However, its bosses still introduce several mechanics that encourage players to read telegraphs and manage positioning carefully.
The dungeon emphasizes:
- pattern recognition
- spread and stack discipline
- knockback awareness
- target prioritization during the final phase
Groups that remain calm and read the arena patterns carefully will find the encounters straightforward, even during the final enrage sequence.

Guildmaster Notes
The Praetorium is where the war finally reaches its breaking point.
Here the Empire gathers its strength behind steel walls and ceruleum engines, confident that no one could ever push through its defenses. Yet history rarely favors those who believe themselves untouchable.
Every corridor of the fortress feels like the last line of a collapsing empire — and at the center of it all waits the man who believes he alone can shape the fate of Eorzea.
