Encounter Overview
The Minstrel’s Ballad: Hades’s Elegy is a multi-phase endurance encounter that tests consistency across several distinct mechanical segments. Unlike most trials, Hades combines traditional boss mechanics, multiple add phases, and a complex debuff resolution sequence that acts as a major execution check.
The fight gradually removes safety from the arena while increasing mechanical density, culminating in a final phase that demands tight positioning, clean stack execution, and sustained healing throughput.
For broader encounter context, see the FFXIV Trial Rankings.
Arena Overview
The arena begins as a circular platform with protective railings that prevent players from falling. As the fight progresses, this protection is removed, introducing lethal fall risk during later phases.
Positioning evolves throughout the fight—from structured clock positions early to dynamic movement and edge-awareness in the final phase.
Mechanic Archive
Ancient Double
Core modifier that causes nearly all mechanics to execute twice. Players must always plan for a second resolution—never stop after the first dodge.
Shadowspread
Sequential cone AoEs on all players. Assign clock positions and sidestep between hits to prevent overlap.
Bad Faith
Directional wall mechanic. Stand behind safe sides first, then immediately reposition for the inverted second hit.
Ravenous Assault
Double tankbuster. Either invuln both hits or swap between casts to avoid lethal vulnerability stacking.
Arcane Utterance (Orbs / Mirrors)
Determines safe zones based on missing elements:
- Red Orbs: Stand in the missing explosion gap
- Blue Mirrors: Stand behind the correct mirror, not the gap
Pre-read positioning is critical—late reactions will fail.
Broken Faith
Falling AoEs that force progressive movement. Move into previously resolved safe zones rather than reacting randomly.
Universal Manipulation
Major execution mechanic with multiple debuffs:
- Healers: full heal Doom targets immediately
- Tanks/Healers: spread donuts at cardinals
- DPS: intentionally die to remove debuff, then reposition safely
This is a coordination check—panic wipes groups.
Blight
Heavy raidwide + bleed following Universal Manipulation. Requires immediate recovery and sustained healing.
Captivity
Traps a player. Group must quickly destroy the prison—delay results in death.
Again the Martyr
Split-role mechanic:
- Healers stack with tanks
- DPS spread and drop AoEs safely
Again the Abyssal Celebrant
Multi-layered overlap: cones, stacks, and puddle drops. Requires strict role positioning and controlled movement lanes.
Dark Seal + Purgation / Shadowstream
Arena denial + directional AoE combo. Identify safe zones near boss while adjusting for center vs side blasts.
Dark Current
Lane-based moving AoEs. Stand behind resolved lanes rather than outrunning them.
Quadrastrike
Multi-hit raid damage with tower soak and heavy DoT. Tanks handle towers while healers stabilize raid.
Encounter Flow
Phase 1 – Double Mechanics Foundation
The fight begins with Ancient Double, immediately establishing the rule of two—every mechanic resolves twice.
Shadowspread and Bad Faith introduce positioning discipline, while Arcane Utterance tests pattern recognition through safe zone identification.
Players must pre-position early and adjust for second hits. Late movement is the most common cause of early wipes.
Phase 2 – Nabriales Add Phase
The group faces a DPS check while managing comet soaks and tethered AoEs.
Priority execution:
- Tanks soak comets consistently
- DPS maintain uptime on boss
- Tethered players aim away from group
Failure to manage either comets or boss HP leads to lethal raid damage.
Phase 3 – Igeyorhm & Lahabrea
This phase introduces elemental pairing. Players must align their debuffs with the correct target and avoid mismatches.
Key concept: Match element → avoid same-element damage.
Tether swaps and positioning discipline are critical to prevent fatal overlaps.
Phase 4 – Ascian Prime (Execution Check)
This is the most technical phase of the encounter.
Universal Manipulation forces the group to resolve multiple debuffs simultaneously:
- Healers stabilize immediately
- Tanks/Healers position at cardinals
- DPS intentionally take damage to cleanse debuffs
This phase rewards planning—not reaction.
Phase 5 – Final Phase (Hades)
Hades returns with full arena danger and sustained pressure mechanics.
Key overlaps include:
- Comet soaking + positioning
- Captivity rescue timing
- Split stack execution (Again the Martyr)
- Complex overlap patterns (Abyssal Celebrant)
Dark Seal + beam mechanics shrink safe zones significantly, requiring players to stay near Hades while adjusting quickly.
Final sequences introduce Dark Current movement patterns and Quadrastrike damage checks, pushing healer throughput and group coordination.
The encounter ends with a sustained damage race before enrage.
