Encounter Overview

Castrum Marinum (Extreme) is a mechanically dense trial focused on spatial awareness, paired execution, and sequential pattern recognition. The encounter features two distinct phases, with Phase 1 emphasizing movement and positioning under pressure, and Phase 2 introducing structured pattern resolution and memory-based mechanics.

The fight is heavily driven by layered AoE patterns and forced positioning, requiring players to identify safe zones quickly while maintaining consistent spacing and coordination.

For difficulty comparisons, see the FFXIV Trial Rankings.

Arena Overview

Phase 1 takes place in a circular arena that progressively shrinks as mechanics resolve, limiting safe space over time.

Phase 2 transitions to a square arena surrounded by a lethal energy wall. Knockbacks and forced movement mechanics make positioning near edges extremely dangerous.

Mechanic Archive

Emerald Shot

Tankbuster.

Execution: Mitigate heavily or invuln. Keep boss stable for positioning mechanics.

Optimized Ultima

Raidwide damage.

Execution: Mitigate and heal—often overlaps other mechanics.

Aetheroplasm Production

Orb management mechanic.

Micro-strategy:

  • Assign pairs to soak orbs
  • Each pair takes one blue + one yellow
  • Avoid double-soaking same color (vuln stack)

Emerald Beam

Rotating cones + expanding rings.

Execution: Rotate with beams while stepping between rings—smooth movement is key.

Magitek Magnetism

Mine push/pull mechanic.

Micro-strategy:

  • Identify push vs pull pairs immediately
  • Pre-move to future safe zone
  • Tanks separate for flare damage

Emerald Hands

In/out AoE check.

Execution:

  • Hands outside → go in (donut safe)
  • Hands inside → go out (point-blank safe)

Divide Et Impera

Shared tankbuster.

Execution: Tanks stack → party spreads at assigned positions.

Split Phase (Expire / Sidescathe)

Boss splits into halves.

Execution:

  • Bottom → move out (point-blank)
  • Top → watch wing, move safe side

Pulse Laser

Targeted line AoEs.

Execution: Bait away from safe zones—do not clip group positioning.

Phase 2 Mechanics

Primus Terminus Est

Directional knockback + line AoE.

Micro-strategy:

  • Marked players go to edges
  • Aim knockback away from group
  • Unmarked players stay center

Tertius Terminus Est

Sequential sword AoEs.

Execution:

  • Stand in last sword’s safe zone
  • Move into cleared space as earlier swords resolve

Mechanized Maneuver

Airship lane sequence.

Micro-strategy:

  • Identify first lane
  • Follow explosions forward
  • Pre-position for knockback after

Legio Phantasmatis

Add phase (Gaius).

Execution: Tank picks up → group resolves overlapping mechanics.

Secundus Terminus Est

Player AoE + follow-up patterns.

Execution:

  • “+” markers → corners
  • “X” markers → cardinals
  • Collapse center after drops

Encounter Flow

Phase 1 – Spatial Control

The fight begins with Aetheroplasm Production, establishing pair-based coordination and resource management.

From there, mechanics layer quickly:

  • Rotating beams
  • Mine positioning
  • Tank flare spacing

Emerald Hands introduces fast in/out reactions, while Magitek Magnetism forces players to pre-read positioning rather than react late.

As the arena shrinks, movement becomes tighter and mistakes more punishing.

Transition – Split Mechanics

The split phase introduces pattern recognition under pressure:

  • Point-blank vs side cleave
  • Red Smash positioning
  • Sword pattern weaving

Key skill: reading boss orientation quickly.

Phase 2 – Pattern Execution

This phase shifts into structured mechanics with heavy sequencing.

Core loop:

  • Directional knockbacks (Primus)
  • Sword patterns (Tertius)
  • Movement sequences (airships)

Mechanics become less reactive and more about correct positioning from the start.

Add Phase – Overlap Check

The Gaius phase introduces layered mechanics:

  • Airships
  • Soldier lanes
  • Knockbacks

Success depends on:

Recognizing patterns early and committing to movement without hesitation.

Final Phase – Precision Execution

The final stretch combines all learned mechanics:

  • Marker-based spreads
  • Sword sequencing
  • Split variations

Key success factor:

Clean positioning and minimal over-adjustment. Most wipes happen from players drifting or reacting too late.

The fight ends with Full-Power Optimized Ultima if DPS is insufficient.
